Yr 5 - Volcano

Today we built a volcano using a 2 liter drink bottle, some foam strips a black plastic bag, some newspaper balls to give us the shape of our volcano and some initiative from the students who added some foliage from the school garden. We got the instructions to build the volcano from the internet while the yr 5 were doing some research for a school project. Although we followed the instructions to the letter the desired result was not achieved and we landed up with a somewhat "dormant" volcano which after some shaking and adding a bit more vinegar slowly erupted for about five seconds. Perhaps a bit more bi-carb would have resulted in a more impressive eruption. These are some photo's during the construction phase and the end result. Well done year fives a great effort.

Professional Experience

Does air have mass?

An interesting science experiment done with yr4/5 whilst on prac.

Objective: to see whether air has mass.
Materials: two equally inflated balloons, a straw, string and scissors.
Procedure:
1. Make a mobile using the balloons, the string and the straw. Make sure the balloons are equally balanced.
2. Let the air out of one balloon by making a small cut near the knot.
Result: the mobile became unbalanced, with the inflated balloon hanging lower.
Conclusion: Air has mass.
